
Women are the backbone of Indigenous communities but their contributions have often been marginalized in textbooks and the media. Celebrate women’s strength and, if appropriate in your classroom, examine the particular challenges that Indigenous women face, including sexual violence, which exists on a continuum with gendered stereotypes from Pocahontas to Halloween costumes. Thinking about women leads us to thinking about gender, including Two Spirit communities.
