This project grew out of two NEH Summer Institutes for K-12 Teachers on Native Americans of New England: A Historical Overview, in 2013 and 2015.  These programs were funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities under the auspices of the Five Colleges Incorporated. For three weeks each year, a dedicated group of Summer Scholars gathered at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for an intensive program that included heavy reading, fabulous guest presenters, lively discussions, and field trips.  We focused on one region over time to underscore the point that Native American histories can be included at any point in Early American and U.S. history.  We benefitted from longstanding relationships between academics, museums and tribal communities in New England.  Use the menu on the left to see the syllabus and other information about the 2013 and 2015 programs.
